Teaching Kids Phonics
For those of you who don’t know, phonics is a method of teaching elementary reading and spelling based on the phonetic interpretation of ordinary spelling. It is considered by some to be a very important part of a child’s literary education as it allows children to make the jump between the written and spoken word. The teaching of phonics/phonetics has been controversial over the years – particularly in the US. However, controversy aside, there are a number of different resources available online to help you with the teaching of phonics to children – a comprehensive list is available on the eLearning Yellow Pages. The important thing right now is to evaluate the child and begin taking steps in the right direction.
Many children do not need an individual formal study in phonics; if parents spend a lot of time speaking very clearly and emphasizing the right sounds children will generally learn on their own. However, certain children have difficulties, particularly if they are around more than one language or thick regional accents. Every child is different, and the most important thing is to evaluate all children as a matter of course. This should obviously be done in a relaxed, fun, game-like fashion – sing the alphabet song and then try and get them to say each letter individually. If there are problems just make a quick mental note of them and try briefly to correct them – if they don’t get it straight away it is best not to push it. Once you are aware of it, it will come with time and there is always support, particularly online.
A good idea is to make flash cards of words the child hears and uses every day, so that they can see visually how the words they say are formed. This can be extended over time by taking the child out and randomly quizzing on spelling – the real key to this problem is continual improvement over time. No child has perfect pronunciation immediately.
Remember to be patient and use all the resources at your disposal. There is a fairly vast collection of information and teaching aids online; a simple google search or a trip to http://www.elearningyellowpages.com/ will turn up a wealth of information.
Good Luck

Introducing children to reading from birth to kindergarten: Growing the essence of education
Children are the SPECIAL members of every family. It is the duty of the parents and guardians to educate them right from the beginning. Today every organization is coming up with new and promising publications that could introduce children to reading from birth to kindergarten.
Parents can also search for these possibilities in the internet. There are many organizations and associations that provide online tutorials, learning resources, tips and techniques for the education of children. This will guide the toddler’s effectively right from the beginning of their introduction to learning and reading.
eLearningYellowPages.com is a good website to find academic curriculum and schools for such home education programs.
There are many publications, academy and schools that help in teaching the children through online itself. The individual course curriculum is divided into various chapters and sections to help teaching effectively. The major facility in this program is that students can learn and understand each and every topic distinctly by the help of 3D illustrations, multimedia content, interactive CD ROM’s etc. Regular assessments are also conducted online to evaluate the students.
Many of these online schools provide practice sessions and assignments to nurture the learning and knowledge of the students. These institutes also award high school diplomas for students. There are also doubts clearing sessions where students can enquire the teachers online and can clear their doubts regarding any of the subjects.
The website eLearningYellowPages.com provides huge information of online academy and tutorials who conduct education for students of ages 3-8 in a very fun-filled and effective approach. Learning in this way reduces the burden of education on the young minds. Even the guardians of the students and teachers can communicate between themselves by the help of message boards and emails. Individual online homerooms are provided for students for interactive learning just like in the kindergartens.

Preschool phonics
Phonics is the art of learning how letters combine to make sounds and words. The main emphasis in Phonics curriculum is teaching letters then slowly and steadily creating a working knowledge of the alphabet. Children easily grab the sounds of each letter by associating it with the word that initiates with the sound of that word. There are many ways to enhance Phonics skills. The major activities for Phonics are reading activities thus toddlers learn to distinguish between vowels and consonants and understand letter combinations such as blends and digraphs.
Before children take a step for kindergarten if they are taught at pre school level it becomes quite easy for students to grab the things in a more effective manner. The burden of learning new things is eased as they are familiar with the words and little less, with reading activities. While a phonics curriculum, generally taught in schools is a critical step in learning to read, many parents don’t count phonemic and phonological awareness as path to success for Phonics Learning. The emphasis should be laid to make children aware with phonemic awareness at pre school level.
To teach phonics at pre school level following things should be kept in mind:
1) Start with showing your child the letters of the alphabet.
2) Teach children the common letters first. Don’t follow the standard way to teach.
3) To make them learn phonics with spelling their name and sound it out to them.
4) Encourage your preschooler child to pay attention to the sounds in words.
5) Making learning language a game can enhance the grasping skills of your pre school child.

Learning Activities for Kids (10 years and younger)
Home schooling your kid is a tough challenge any day, but many a mom will tell you that the fun element in it makes the challenge worth its while. One mom, who wrote to me, mentioned in her mail, “…I had seen him stumbling across the room to get to his toys when he could barely talk. And that was just a couple of years back. Can’t believe he has grown so fast, and now I don’t know how to get started with schooling him. Of course, I would prefer schooling him from home anyway…”
This mom’s dilemma is not unique to her. Almost all mothers, even those who do not home school their kids; face this situation at some point of time. Well, I’ll give you guys and gals a clue, and I know that all of you can catch on to it even as soon as I mention it. The word is, ‘Play’. That’s right… play with your kid. That’s the best way to start the teaching process for them. Remember, when you were their age, you could relate to ‘games’ far better than you could relate to ‘studies’.
We’ve come a long way since then and have worked to turn the tide in favor of our children. So now, they can learn while they play. To begin with, you can try out some of the innovative home schooling products that are available in the market today. For example, you can definitely look at Hooked On Phonics —a reading program for children, developed by a father whose son found it difficult to learn how to read. The product today is the number one among the recognized names in teaching children how to read.(Learn more about it when you go to eLearningYellowPages.com)
Another similar product I found is Frontline Phonics dedicated to children between the age of 3 and 8. It is fun and effective, and the success rate is phenomenal. These products should solve your problem of teaching the child how to read. So what will you do once they have started reading?
If you’re like me, a literature person, and want your kid to love the novels that you found so amazing, you can get your kid hooked on to children’s books from Scholastic. The company is a well-known publisher of books for children of all ages. And as they say… it’s never to early to start reading.
Most people, however, face the toughest challenge while teaching their kid how to write and do math. If you are in such a dilemma, you can yourself develop incentive-based games to help your kid learn. For example, demonstrate a numerical activity to him using a candy or a toy, and encourage him to work out the result for himself. If he is successful, the candy/toy is his. There are numerous such games that you can come up with at leisure. However, if you do not have the time, you can always try to find a solution in the wonderful learning games made available by Funschool. They have a huge array of learning products for kids, and admittedly, the parents are spoilt for choice. I would also highly recommend learning games from Leapfrog who have their games categorized for children of various age groups (infant, toddler, pre-school etc). That should make it easier for you to pick and choose.
These little tidbits on home schooling your tiny one should get you started for now. I must tell you however, that you cannot leave everything to the toys and the books. At the end of the day, it has to be you, the parent who will guide the child towards becoming a clever, intelligent, and well-meaning human being. These are just your tools and aids, but your kid needs you to play an active role in his/her learning process. Perhaps that’s why the adage—start with the activities.
Did you find this post useful? C’mon and send me your comments. I will look forward to your responses.

Motivating the Homeschooled Kid
Homeschooling is better than regular school in a lot of ways. Children benefit from the control in pace and hours that such an environment allows. Children who are educated via homeschooling also have more freedom as to the extent of their learning, as they do not have to be stuck to the traditional curriculum of campus schooling, and can even extend their learning to incorporate subject matters that really interest them. However, the biggest problem parents may face with children who are homeschooled is motivating the child to learn.
In an environment with less pressure due to the lack of rigid schedules, uniforms, and an actual classroom, there is a tendency for the child to slack off and become lazy. In motivating homeschooled children, the important thing is to cater to their needs. Find out what they like to do and what is fun for them so that you can incorporate these into their daily activities. This way you can make them look forward to learning because it is associated with the things they like to do most. For example, if a child is into soccer, you can join this activity with his mathematical lessons by letting him calculate how many goals he can score, and so on. Be as creative as possible, and let the activities vary so that the child is always excited about what kind of activity he is going to be doing next.
Another thing that motivates children towards learning is assigning them less work. It may sound crazy, but sometimes it actually makes the child work ahead and do more than what is asked of him. This is the same as when children are given a certain amount of food on their plate. When there is too much, they get overwhelmed even before they touch the food, because they think right away that they cannot finish it. However, when they are given only a small amount their appetites are whetted and they find themselves wanting more. It is basically the same with schoolwork.
Lastly, as with all children, incentives are of great importance. A child is always motivated by the thought of rewards. However, different children have different likes and dislikes, which is why rewards must be tailored to the child’s preferences, unlike in regular school wherein children are given generic incentives.
Every child is different, so why make them go through a generic learning process? For better learning, it is important to focus on what they really need, and homeschooling can give them that. If you are interested, and would like to find more resources about homeschooling for children, visit http://www.elearningyellowpages.com/ where a section on homeschooling can help you decide if this is the right path towards your children’s fulfillment in education.

Top Ten Questions About Homeschooling Children
Thinking about taking the plunge into homeschooling? You’ve probably got some questions. Others have had questions, too, so we’ve compiled our own Top Ten list of questions about homeschooling children.
1. How can I teach my child? I don’t have a teaching degree!
Most states offer various ways to set up a homeschool program. Some require the homeschool teacher to have a high school diploma or GED; some request a licensed teacher oversee the program; many require nothing.
2. What about socialization with other children?
You can socialize your child during homeschool just as you socialized your child before he or she started school. Homeschooled children can participate in church activities, 4-H, scouts, and other activities.
3. I’m not good at (fill in the subject)! How can I teach it?
Teachers sometimes teach subjects with which they’re not familiar; you can do the same thing with a little advance planning, some library books, and the Internet or other online resources. The resources won’t come knocking on your door and offer up their services, but they are out there if you’re willing to hunt them down. Alternatively, some parents hire tutors for subjects about which they are less confident to teach.
4. Where can I find accredited Homeschool Curriculum?
There are some great packaged homeschooling programs. Some of them may be completed via the Internet, while others may use CD-Rom programs. Take a look at the directory at eLearningYellowPages.com. They list many good providers of accredited homeschool curriculum.
5. What college will accept a homeschooled child?
Lots of them! Homeschooled children take the ACT and SAT tests just like customarily schooled children. Homeschooled children can also take Advanced Placement (AP) classes and tests, which can count as college credit.
6. How do I know my child is learning at the proper rate?
The same way you knew your child was learning to walk or talk at the proper time. You found out the appropriate range, and then you observed your child. Actually, it’s even easier than that for homeschooling. There are practice tests and workbooks you can use, but the best gauge will be the time you spend with your child, and your observations and conversations.
7. What about the prom?
Check with your state’s homeschool program. Some states have proms specifically for homeschoolers. Some have you work with a teacher or program in your local school district, and your children can attend that school’s prom.
8. How do I know what subject areas need to be covered?
Your state’s homeschool program will give you information on that. You can be assured, however, that the basics of reading, writing, and math will need to be covered.
9. Where do I find information to help me decide if homeschooling is for me?
Each state’s Department of Education has information, as well as websites such as http://www.homeschoolcentral.com/
10. Do I have to keep records? What kind?
The answer to that is a definite yes, you need to keep records. There are many paper forms out there, as well as computer programs that you can purchase. Again, check your own state’s requirements and make sure your recordkeeping conforms to their requirements, or all that hard work could go up in smoke.

Responsibilites of Parent Led Accredited Home School Programs
Due to certain benefits of home schooling, many parents have decided to teach their children at home. Though the concept of home schooling is highly beneficial to children with special needs and circumstances along with helping the average child achieve excellence academically, it also requires a high level of commitment from the parent. Understanding the responsibilities as well as the support provided by parent led accredited home school programs will help make the right decision.
The concept of public schooling works well for most parents who find that their work or home commitments do not allow them the liberty to educate their child at home. So obviously the most basic requirement of a parent led accredited home school program is the time demanded from the parent. However, flexibility of time allows the parent to decide the convenient time for scheduling study. Parent led accredited home school programs like Switched-On Schoolhouse R² offered by Alpha Omega Publications do facilitate teaching for the parents by providing the curriculum via interactive CD ROMs, yet parental attention is a necessary prerequisite to the method of teaching.
Another parent led accredited home school program is offered by The Jubilee Academy which provides guidance from trained staff members in the relevant field but it is parent who not only oversees the entire study process but also teaches each subject. The involvement of the parent is extended to the examinations too. Parents mark the tests taken by the student and are provided with a password, which allows them access to the answers to help them grade the child properly.
Under such circumstances, the involvement of the parent in the education of the child is very high. Right from the teaching of the curriculum, to guiding the child about the subjects and then finally testing the proficiency level of the child, is undertaken by the parent. Under these circumstances, the parent is quick to target the areas where the child requires more guidance and thus contribute largely to the student’s academic success.
There are online teacher led programs like the ones offered by MorningStar Academy but here though the level of involvement of the parent is not as high as in the case of complete parent led accredited home school programs yet there is a constant need for parental supervision.
As discussed above there are varying levels of parental involvement in the various home schooling programs offered. Yet the parental responsibility only fluctuates in the various programs while the prerequisite of parental supervision remains constant.

Home School Pro and Con
Homeschooling is a rapidly growing trend while public schools are a universal concept adopted by all and sundry. Needless to say, there are pros and cons for each of the two methods of schooling. The main points of the home school pro and con list have been discussed below.
On the pro side of home schooling is the ever-obvious convenience that such programs offer. The student is able to study within the comfort of ones homes where a sense of familiarity prevents distraction and thus helps the child give complete concentration to the job at hand. Defenders of public schooling may argue that keeping the child at home would prevent personality development, which is watered by interaction. However, this argument looses ground as it is obviously stated that this interaction with the rest of the world can be provided under several other circumstances and is not confined to public schooling only. In fact statistics state that home schooled children are much less prone to behavioral disorders as compared to their public schooled counterparts.
Home schooling also offers advantages for the special needs student. Be it a fast-paced scholar or the one who finds it harder to grasp the concepts at hand both benefit from adopting home schooling. Since public schools cannot offer more than a mere average pace of study to these children, they often turn to home schooling which allows the parent to judge the comprehension level of the child and thus follow a child oriented pace of study. This pace of study works well for the fast learner who can move ahead without being bored by the repeated instructions about an already understood concept. On the other hand a student who needs more than average time to grasp the curriculum finds no hesitation in repeating the study since there is no peer pressure to perform. Since the student teacher ratio in the home schooling environment is, very high parents are able to quickly understand the needs of the child and work in accordance to them.
Home school curriculum programs are a definite plus for children heavily involved in sports or other extracurricular activities such as acting, music or entertaining who find that following home schooling allows them the flexibility to schedule the time of study and thus enables them to dedicate time to their sport or art.
It can be clearly seen that the scales seem to tip towards the plus side in the home schooling pro and con list and this is the reason behind the increasing popularity of the academic teaching method. Many accredited institutes today offer complete home schooling programs right from kindergarten to high school and these can be easily located on eLearningYellowPages.com directory of distance learning and online education.

It is of utmost importance that those on the threshold of their academic careers master the art of reading as early as possible. A strong reading foundation provides easy comprehension of other subjects, which translates to academic success. However, teaching how to read can be a difficult task especially for those who are not professional teachers.

Reading programs that follow a step-by-step plan based on phonetics are known to be more successful than those who ignore phonics.
Though the methods adopted by tutors to teach reading might differ, it has been proven that those who inculcate phonics recognition in the student reach their goal faster. Associating a particular letter of the alphabet with its corresponding phonic sound will facilitate and hasten the students learning process. Tutoring reading will need a through and thought out plan which will guide the student from the basic level of reading to the higher ones in a systematic way. the Concept of Homeschool Multi Age Classroom
Contrary to popular belief, homeschooling is an age-old concept. Imparting academic education to children at home was common even before the concept of schools was born. Even today, parents and guardians who can spare the time prefer to educate their children at home due to the tremendous benefits of homeschooling. The only draw back being that there are few guidelines to follow while homeschooling a child.
This issue has been resolved by homeschooling directories like eLearningYellowPages.com that provide several excellent programs that can be adopted by those who wish to educate their children at home. Further more these programs cater to a multi age group of students from Pre School through the high school years.
Most people looking at accredited homeschooling curriculum have various age groups that need attention in the academic sphere. It is not possible to have different time slots for each of these students. Since there is, a severe lack of teaching staff at home with the adults not matching up in numbers to the students at hand there arises a need for a common homeschool multi age classroom.
The concept of such a classroom when simplified translates to proportionate saving of time that can be used fruitfully elsewhere. Say there are three children in a house aged four, seven and ten years. All three will have completely varied syllabus. With a different curriculum that needs to be imparted to each child, it would be almost impossible to teach each one separately.
Thus a multi age classroom where all three can sit and achieve their respective academic targets is highly beneficial. Studying different curriculums yet being seated together keeps the competition healthy that provides the push needed to go on while at the same time the students get to study age appropriate curriculums.
Since most public schools have a rigid cut off date that determines the age group that is to be exposed to a certain level of academic challenges it translates poorly for both the intelligent as well as the slow student. Therefore, a child who is five years of age will have to suffer the academic syllabus assigned to his age group irrespective of whether he falls behind or surpasses it completely. On the contrary while homeschooling children one can decide to have a multiage classroom, which is exposed to a syllabus not according to age but intelligence.
Obviously, the homeschooling multi age classroom provides the teacher as well as the student with much more liberty and ease to facilitate impartation of knowledge as opposed to a public school that follows rigid guidelines based completely on the law of averages. This law does not keep in mind that each child is different and so are his needs. Tags: Homeschool Multi Age Classroom
